About the Organization
Melanin Angels (MA) is a community-rooted organization founded in 2020 with a deep commitment to creating a more just, inclusive, and equitable Los Angeles County. Our work centers on dismantling barriers and ensuring that no one is excluded or mistreated because of their race, language, ability, gender identity, or lived experience. We believe that equity isn’t optional, it’s essential to the health and dignity of our communities.
What We Do
At Melanin Angels, we provide harm reduction services and compassionate care to individuals impacted by homelessness, substance use, incarceration, and systemic injustice. Through mobile outreach, wellness drives, overdose prevention, peer support, and community education, we meet people where they are without judgment and without barriers. We distribute supplies like naloxone, hygiene kits, and safer use materials, while also offering referrals to healthcare, housing, and mental health services. Whether it’s through a conversation, a warm blanket, or lifesaving training, our work is about building trust, creating safe spaces, and walking alongside people on their journey, at their own pace, in their own way.
Why We Do It
At Melanin Angels, we believe everyone deserves dignity, safety, and a real chance at healing, no matter their circumstances. We do this work because too many lives have been lost or forgotten due to systems that fail to meet people where they are. Our mission is rooted in love, harm reduction, and community care. We show up for those navigating homelessness, substance use, incarceration, and stigma because we know that change begins with connection not judgment. Every kit we hand out, every story we listen to, and every life we touch is a step toward justice, healing, and hope.
Wellness Bags: Heal Los Angeles
The Wellness Bag Drive
Launched in 2020 by our Executive Director, Latonia Freeman, the Wellness Bag Drive began as a simple act of love, offering a small gesture of care to unhoused individuals who are too often overlooked. What started with just a few bags quickly grew when we saw participants sharing their items with others in need. That moment reminded us: community takes care of community. Each Wellness Bag is packed with essentials like hygiene products, wool socks, gloves, beanies, hand warmers, snacks, water, and a warm blanket. Items meant to bring both comfort and dignity to our folks on the street.
